Cubism, an avant-garde art movement of the early 20th century, is characterized by its radical departure from traditional perspectives and its emphasis on geometric abstraction. Artists like Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque deconstructed objects into fragmented shapes, presenting multiple viewpoints simultaneously. This method challenged conventional representation and emphasized the flat, two-dimensional surface of the canvas. Cubism is divided into two phases: Analytic Cubism, which focused on breaking down objects into their essential forms, and Synthetic Cubism, which incorporated mixed media and collage elements. The movement's influence extends beyond painting into sculpture, architecture, and modern design, remaining a foundational force in contemporary visual arts.
